What is biochemical semen analysis?

Biochemical semen analysis assesses the function of the accessory glands in the male reproductive system: the seminal vesicles, prostate, and bulbourethral glands. These glands produce the majority of seminal fluid, which provides the environment in which spermatozoa swim and is crucial for their survival within the female reproductive tract.

Why is this examination important?

This test helps identify inflammation, deficiencies of essential components in the seminal fluid, and potential obstructions within the reproductive tract, all of which can impact male fertility.

When should it be performed?

  • Suspected obstruction in the reproductive tract.
  • Recurrent or severe infections of the urogenital system.
  • Unexplained (idiopathic) infertility.
