What is sperm cryopreservation?

Spermatozoa are preserved in liquid nitrogen (at very low temperatures) for many years without losing their fertilizing ability, in order to be used later. It can be described as a method of preserving male fertility. Notably, babies have been born from sperm that remained frozen for 40 years.

Why is this examination important?

This process ensures a man's ability to have his own biological offspring at a later time.

How is it performed?

Before the procedure, a period of abstinence from ejaculation for 3-5 days is required. Following this, the spermatozoa are treated and then diluted in specialized cryoprotective media. The sample is subsequently stored in liquid nitrogen containers, where it is preserved at extremely low temperatures (-196 °C).

Who should consider sperm freezing?

Sperm freezing is a viable option for any man who wants to preserve his fertility for future use, whether for medical or personal reasons.

It is particularly recommended for:
  • Men with Low Sperm Count or Quality: Those who wish to have children in the future despite current fertility challenges.

  • Men Undergoing Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy: To safeguard fertility before starting treatment.

  • Men Being Prepared for Certain Surgeries: Such as varicocele repair or vasectomy.

  • Men Exposed to Occupational Hazards: Those working with toxic agents, chemicals, radiation, or in high-temperature environments.

  • Men Planning to Transition Gender: To preserve fertility before transitioning.

  • Men who wish to have children at an older age (>40 old) for personal or social reasons.
